Size-based scheduling vs fairness for datacenter flows

چکیده
Contrary to the conclusions of a recent body work where approximate shortest remaining processing time first (SRPT) flow scheduling is advocated for datacenter networks, this paper aims demonstrate that per-flow fairness remains preferable objective. We evaluate abstract queuing models by analysis and simulation illustrate non-optimality SRPT under reasonable assumptions flows occur in batches bursts not, as usually assumed, individually at instants Poisson process. Results these have significant implications design bandwidth sharing strategies networks. In particular, we propose novel "virtual fair scheduling" algorithm enforces between arguably simple enough be implemented high speed devices.

Inter-Datacenter Scheduling of Large Data Flows
Inter-datacenter transfers of non-interactive but timely large flows over a private (managed) network is an important problem faced by many cloud service providers. The considered flows are non-interactive because they do not explicitly target the end users. However, most of them must be performed on a timely basis and are associated with a deadline. We propose to schedule these flows by a cent...
متن کاملCross-layer Packet-dependant OFDM Scheduling Based on Proportional Fairness
This paper assumes each user has more than one queue, derives a new packet-dependant proportional fairness power allocation pattern based on the sum of weight capacity and the packet’s priority in users’ queues, and proposes 4 new cross-layer packet-dependant OFDM scheduling schemes based on proportional fairness for heterogeneous classes of traffic. Scenario 1, scenario 2 and scenario 3 lead r...
متن کاملHawk: Hybrid Datacenter Scheduling
This paper addresses the problem of efficient scheduling of large clusters under high load and heterogeneous workloads. A heterogeneousworkload typically consists of many short jobs and a small number of large jobs that consume the bulk of the cluster’s resources. Recent work advocates distributed scheduling to overcome the limitations of centralized schedulers for large clusters with many comp...
متن کاملSize-based scheduling to improve fairness and performance in 802.11 networks
Using wireless technologies to access the Internet (e.g., public hotspots) and setting small ad hoc networks (e.g., during a meeting), are common experiences for end users. Those environments are challenging for TCP because of the variability of the available bandwidth and the competition among flows that span over paths of different lengths and different types (wired or wireless). In this pape...
متن کاملDatacenter Changes vs. Employment Rates for Datacenter Managers In the Cloud Computing Era
Due to the evolving Cloud Computing paradigm, there is a prevailing concern that in the near future data center managers may be in short supply. Cloud computing, as a whole, is becoming more prevalent into today’s computing world. In fact, cloud computing has become so popular that some are now referring to data centers as “cloud centers”. How does this interest in cloud computing translate int...
